The Great North Walk - Little Friend

            This is my Section 8 - From Galston Gorge to Crosslands

Today I had a friend named Tolstoy to accompany me. After a week of steady rain and a storm last night, the track was wet but beautiful. The day started cloudy but opened up to a sunny and warm 22C.

This was an easy 7 km walk through sandstone gorge country next to Berowra Creek. We had the sound of rushing water accompanying us for the entire walk, both from the creek and from waterfalls and streams flowing into it. The tracks were also full of water. 

The rocky gullies of grass trees, casuarinas and open eucalypt forest were delicious, as the heath was bursting with flowers.

We saw and heard a lot of bird life; whip birds calling for their mates with no response, crows, magpies, cockatoos and those little birds that say 'meep meep' in liquid high notes.

As we enjoyed the path next to the very wide, full creek in the second section of our walk, the track became soft and flat, the walking very easy, like strolling through a magical fairy land of ferns and soft leaves. We noticed mangroves appearing at the riverside.

Arriving at Crosslands was a contrast, from hours in the serene bush park we were suddenly confronted by manicured lawns, the noise of generators, candy floss and slushies, and a loud and  enthusiastic mob of kids and families celebrating the end of their football season.

The history of Crosslands goes back to late 19th century when a Yorkshireman named Burton Crosland came to the area. He made the road to get here, which was no mean feat considering the steep ridgeline. He made a living from timber, fruit growing, boat building and fishing, and built a guesthouse near the river for 'parties of sportsmen' . When he died in 1920 the park went to the local council to manage and is now a lovely picnic ground. 

The Berowra Creek wraps around a bend surrounded by steep ridged on either side; it is a beautifully scenic spot with plenty of access to the river for watersports and swimming.
