Ashford in the water - a photo on Flickriver

You know I enjoy taking holiday photos where I do nothing with them, but this is where my passion lies, in the processing of photos like this...Love it....

Some background information on the village of Ashford-in-the-Water in Derbyshire, England.

It is located in the Peak District on the River Wye, about 2 miles from Bakewell.

It was known for quarrying a type of black marble limestone and for the tradition of making "maiden's garlands" to mark the deaths of virgins until 1801.

Some are preserved in the parish church.

The name derives from the Old English meaning "a ford where ash trees grow." In the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as a place where lead was refined.

By 1848 it had grown to around 950 inhabitants, likely due to marble mills and polishing works established there in 1786.

The village used to belong to the Cavendish family but was sold off in the 1950s.

The cultural tradition of well-dressing, decorating wells with clay and plant designs, continues there annually around Trinity Sunday.
