Sunset at Lake Zell - a photo on Flickriver

Lake Zell is located in the municipality of the town of Zell am See im Pinzgau in the Salzburger Land in Austria, which gives the lake its name.

The lake drains south into the Salzach via canals a good two kilometers long - the large and small lake canals. About two kilometers north of the lake shore, an inconspicuous valley watershed separates the lake from the Saalach, which, flowing north, only flows into the Salzach below Salzburg after about 80 kilometers. The water temperature in summer is between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.[2]

It was historically important as a winter extraction site for ice as a refrigerant for ice cellars, including German breweries, which were supplied by rail wagons.

Geographie
Der See entwässert über gut zwei Kilometer lange Kanäle – dem großen und dem kleinen Seekanal – nach Süden in die Salzach. Etwa zwei Kilometer nördlich des Seeufers trennt eine unauffällige Talwasserscheide den See von der Saalach, die, nördlich fließend, erst nach etwa 80 Kilometer, unterhalb von Salzburg in die Salzach mündet. Die Wassertemperatur liegt im Sommer zwischen 18 und 24 Grad Celsius.[2]

Historisch bedeutsam war er als winterliche Gewinnungsstätte für Eis als Kältemittel für Eiskeller auch deutscher Brauereien, die per Bahnwaggon beliefert wurden.
