In the beginning.... - a photo on Flickriver

This image shows a new-born (literally minutes old) wildebeest calf suckling for the first time.

This is an extremely dangerous time for both mother and calf as the predators (lion, cheetah and hyena) are always on the look out for newly borns, still unsteady on their feet, with their mothers at the birth site.

The Wattled Starlings are perched on the mother's back, acting as sentinels, ready to give an alarm call should a predator approach. Note that they are all looking in the same direction - downwind - the direction from whence any predator is likely to attack.

This is an example of one of the many symbiotic relationships that can be found in nature.
