HMS Bounty Sinks in Hurricane Sandy - a photo on Flickriver

I awoke this morning to the sad news of the sinking of the Tall Ship, HMS Bounty seen here during happier times sailing through the Golden Gate for San Francisco's Fleetweek in 2008.

The Coast Guard reported today that the tall ship HMS Bounty made for the 1962 Hollywood movie Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando, "The Bounty" starring Mel Gibson and which also made appearances in "Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest", has sank in rough seas off the coast of North Carolina's Outer Banks by Hurricane Sandy.

14 crewmembers were rescued but unfortunately two are still listed as missing. The famous ship began taking on water in 40 mile-per hour winds with waves topping 18 feet. As the crew tried to board lifeboats, three members were swept overboard by waves. Crewmembers heroically saved one man pulling him in to the lifeboats.

My thoughts today go out to crew, their families and the Coast Guard rescue teams which came to their rescue.

I count myself as lucky to have seen the historic ship here under sail and when she docked.
