Barrow Hill Chesterfield Derbyshire 21st April 2002

            Posing on the turntable inside the roundhouse at Barrow Hill is LNER Thompson B1 4-6-0 61238 Leslie Runciman. Well, actually it's 61264 posing as 61238 for the weekend.

It was a special steam Open day & I had taken advantage of a 07.00 photographer's opening time to avoid the crowds that filled the whole site later. If I was there at 07.00 can you imagine what ungodly hour the train crews had to arrive to light up the engines?

The former Midland Railway steam roundhouse located at Barrow Hill near Chesterfield, is the last surviving operational roundhouse engine shed in Great Britain. It opened in 1870 &  was in continuous use until it finally closed in 1991.

It was reopened by the Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society in 1998 & is home to many steam, diesel & electric locomotives.

I was still a cleaner on the Great Central Railway at Loughborough in 2002 but since then I have had the pleasure, & honour, of firing this fine engine.
