Ipswich Suffolk 11th August 2020

            Almost from another time on Ipswich docks. 

Since the 1990s the Victorian harbour buildings have been well and truly gentrified and the docks turned over to pleasure craft with the modern Associated British Ports area lying further south on Cliff Quay. 

Most of the stone and brick dock buildings have been renovated and put to different use, mainly residential and restaurants/ hotels. However if you search, in the Ipswich Haven Marina (between the Wet Dock and the River Orwell New Cut) this cameo offers itself. There are two Babcock self-propelled cranes, a range of warehouses and this complex of track work still in situ. The cranes are no longer operational and the tracks are isolated from any other railway route. 

On my 1988 Quail BR track diagram map there was still a single line connection from the Up yard west of Ipswich station that crossed the River Orwell, passed through the freight terminal, over Stoke Road level crossing and into the Ipswich Haven Marina area behind the warehouse on the right. It then made its way over the swing bridge by the lock to Cliff Quay and a container depot. I’m not sure when it closed but probably at the same time as the gentrification.
