Barberton Daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) - a photo on Flickriver

            Gerbera  L. is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It was named in honor of the German naturalist Traugott Gerber, a friend of Carolus Linnaeus.
It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia. The first scientific description of a Gerbera was made by J.D. Hooker in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1889 when he described Gerbera jamesonii, a South African species also known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton Daisy.
Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colors. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum. The flowers can be as small as 7 cm (Gerbera mini 'Harley') in diameter or up to 12 cm (Gerbera ‘Golden Serena’).
Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. The domesticated cultivars are mostly a result of a cross between Gerbera jamesonii and another South African species Gerbera viridifolia. The cross is known as Gerbera hybrida. Thousands of cultivars exist. They vary greatly in shape and size. Colors include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The center of the flower is sometimes black. Often the same flower can have petals of several different colors.

Gerbera L. è un genere di piante erbacee della famiglia delle Asteraceae, originario dell'Africa, dell'Asia e del Sudamerica.
Il nome deriva dal naturalista tedesco Traugott Gerber, amico di Carl von Linné.
Oltre che come graziose piante ornamentali dalla facile coltura, le specie del genere Gerbera (soprattutto la G. jamesonii) vengono coltivate industrialmente per la produzione del fiore reciso.
È stata introdotta in Italia per la prima volta da un floricoltore tedesco intorno al 1925-1930 ma solo intorno al 1950 ha iniziato ad essere apprezzata sia come fiore reciso che come pianta da coltivazione.
Le Gerbera presentano foglie lanceolate e lobate, disposte a rosetta. Invecchiando, le foglie diventano pubescenti nella pagina inferiore e si abbassano per lasciare spazio alle nuove piccole foglie che, nei primi giorni si presentano bianche e pelose.
I fiori, a capolino, sono molto durevoli e decorativi e compaiono all'inizio dell'estate. Sono portati da lunghi steli coperti da una leggera peluria bianca. Per la loro forma e struttura i fiori di Gerbera sono simili ad una margherita, ma più eleganti sia per i lunghi petali appuntiti, sia per i colori brillanti che vanno dal bianco al giallo fino al rosso-scuro. Ogni fiore, se fecondato, può produrre numerosissimi piccoli semi, fusiformi e appuntiti, caratterizzati da una corona di peli piumosi.
