This species is very similar in appearance and name to the North American Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus), which winters south into Mexico. This is an example of convergent evolution, in which two different species in different locations develop almost identical plumages and behaviours. Another classic case is that of North American meadowlarks (genus Sturnella) and the Yellow-throated Longclaw (Macronyx croceus) of Africa — in this instance the birds belong to different families.
