South Wales Transport Co Ltd Willowbrook 003 Leyland Leopard LCY 109X

            Willowbrook developed the 003 for the National Bus Company, who wanted a dual purpose or DP type coach built to a price. Willowbrook had some success with the NBC who had purchased a large number of  008 Spacecar bodied Bedford, AEC and Leyland coaches. The framework of the 003, was the same as used on the Spacecar, with a similar front and rear as the original Duple Dominant. The NBC placed an order for the 003, all but a few mounted on Leyland Leopard chassis, the exception was some 003 bodied Bedford Y Series. Willowbrook could not cope with such a large order, thus there was long delivery delays. Things went from bad to worse for Willowbrook, due to build quality problems, resulting in some 003s falling too bits, or not even finished! So concered were the NBC, that they had to  send some of their own engineers to Willowbrook's factory, to make sure that the 003s were built to NBCs specification and build quality. A large number of unbodied Leopard chassis were removed from Willowbrook and sent to Duple and Plaxtons to be bodied. Here we see on a hot July day at the Ribble bus station in Carlisle en-route to Swansea on the National Express 808 service, is the South Wales Transport Co Ltd, Willowbrook 003 (C46F) bodied Leyland Leopard (PSU3F/4R LCY 109X. It must be said, this 003 looks rather smart in the Nat Ex stripey livery , also below the front windscreen is painted grey for some reason. The coach was parked up, so the passengers could have a meal break.
