Il volume è un'ode alla biodiversità delle acque dolci. Attraverso racconti di campo, dati scientifici e immagini inedite, vengono esplorati gli ambienti tra i più preziosi e minacciati d'Italia, dalle sorgenti d'alta quota alle lagune costiere, passando per ruscelli, fiumi e grandi laghi. Granchi, gamberi, spugne, larve di insetti nascosti tra la vegetazione del fondo; mitologiche lamprede che compiono migrazioni di centinaia di chilometri per accoppiarsi e poi morire; una grande varietà di pesci autoctoni e rarefatti; rospi e tritoni durante il periodo riproduttivo, l'elusivo proteo delle grotte sotterranee, bisce che catturano prede di grandi dimensioni; uccelli limicoli impegnati nelle loro frenetiche attività nel fango, mammiferi all'abbeverata. E poi, i problemi di conservazione, dall'inquinamento all'alterazione degli argini, dall'introduzione di specie alloctone alla pesca eccessiva, e alcuni progetti per salvare il salvabile, come la reintroduzione della trota marmorata e dello storione cobice. Per realizzare le immagini, ore di sessioni nel ghiaccio d'alta quota, nel fango dei grandi laghi oscuri, e nella corrente impetuosa dei corsi d'acqua più grandi del nostro Paese.
