Tierra y Fuego...

Con la reciente erupción del Volcán Villarrica, ubicado en el límite entre las Regiones de la Araucanía y de los Lagos (Chile), me vinieron a la mente recuerdos de una serie de viajes que realicé por la zona con amigos entre los años 2000 y 2001. En esa época las cámaras digitales todavía eran cosa del futuro, así que yo cargaba con mi querida Canon EOS 500, una hermosa cámara analógica con película de 35 mm. Durante esas vacaciones tuve la suerte de ascender hasta el borde del cráter en dos oportunidades, y en ambas me maravilló lo que pude ver…
El Volcán Villarrica se caracteriza por presentar un pequeño lago de lava en su cráter central, que en esa oportunidad pude retratar con esta panorámica realizada con 10 fotogramas (casi medio rollo de 24!). Debo reconocer que fue una experiencia para todos los sentidos, además del hermoso espectáculo para los ojos y del molesto olor a huevo podrido del ácido sulfhídrico en bajas proporciones, una de las cosas que más me llamaron la atención fue el ruido: el movimiento de la lava producía un sonido muy grave, casi gutural, que llenaba el ambiente de manera intimidante. Realmente espero que la situación se normalice pronto por aquellos hermosos pagos de la Patagonia Chilena.

ENGLISH CAPTION: "Earth and Fire..." With the recent eruption of the Villarrica Volcano, located in the border between the Araucanía and De los Lagos Regions (Chile), I remembered a series of trips I made to this area between 2000 and 2001. At that time digital cameras were still in the future, so I was carrying my beloved Canon EOS 500, a beautiful analog camera with 35mm film. During those vacations I was lucky to climb to the crater rim twice, and in both occasions I was fascinated with the experience...
The Villarrica Volcano is characterized by a small lava lake located in the central crater, which I captured with this panorama made of 10 frames (half a roll of 24!). I must admit it was an experience for all the senses, besides the beautiful spectacle for the eyes and an annoying rotten egg smell due to low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, one of the things that struck me the most was the noise: the movements of the the lava lake produced a very deep, almost guttural sound that filled the place in an intimidating manner. I really hope that the situation gets back to normal very soon in those beautiful places of the Chilean Patagonia.
