Skirting big walls

            In the southern parts of the Dolomites High Route 1 (Alta Via 1), there are fewer hikers and the trails tend to get narrower and crumblier. The stunning views are the main danger tempting the hiker to take his/her eyes off the track.  Hiking poles help with balance and stability and add a safety margin. The photo is a panorama taken on the section between Rifugio Vazzoler and Rifugio Carestiato, a very dry stretch where we made the mistake of underestimating our water needs and were counting on finding some along the way; there was none.
