"Stolen Valor" (October 2023)

            I'm often telling readers in the caption here about my adventurous treks deep into the woods and mountains associated with my photos. Perhaps that creates a misconception that every photograph here was made after a ten mile hike. That is certainly not the case. While I did make many of these photographs while I was out hiking, and while many of those hikes were strenuous hikes, there is a good chunk that required little to no physical effort at all.  

Last year I shared 50 photos. Out of those 50, I made about 16 near the road. I don't give those stories as much air time in the captions, because they don't seem as interesting, and they definitely aren't badass, but I think they are arguably more important to my maturation as a photographer.  

These are the scenes that you can only find when you travel through life open to the world around you. They are the ones that others pass by without a second thought. They are the personal images, unique to the photographer's particular vision of the world.  

This photo here is a section of the woods along the way to my daughters' daycare. It's across from a squat cement town works building. It's a busy road and I have driven by it many times, but this year at this time, I connected with it and felt compelled to photograph it. And while I didn't need to hike ten miles up a mountain to get to the spot, there also wasn't a trail leading me there, which arguably makes it a more difficult photograph to make.
