            In January 2009, Antony Gormley's 2002 sculpture 'Filter' was installed (by abseilers) in the glass atrium extending the original City Art Gallery building into the adjacent Manchester Athenaeum.
The life-sized male figure of welded steel rings, based on Gormley's own body, contains a 'heart' of steel balls, each of the same diameter as the inside of the rings.

As Gormley observed, an advantage of this location, beyond it being "light and clear" and not shared with other artworks, is that one can view the piece from below, from the same level and, here, from above, where one can appreciate the attractive discolouration of the rings, introduced by the welding process.

With this purchase, part of the Gallery's strategy to develop its contemporary collection, Manchester became one of five (in 2009, anyway) UK regional galleries to have an Antony Gormley sculpture on permanent display.
