Ant infected by Ophiocordyceps complex unilateralis (the zombie-ant fungi)

            Ants infected by this Ophiocordyceps species climb up trees and latch on to twigs between 1 and 2 meters above the ground, where they ultimately sprout the fungi's spore-bearing structure, and ultimately infect other ants of the same species. It's macabre but fascinating. This one was clinging to a cucumber magnolia tree (Magnolia acuminata). 27 image focus stack.
