Sequoia Giant

            Sequoias grow naturally along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between 5,000 and 7,000 feet above sea level and far inland. That elevation provides the trees with dry mountain air necessary for their cones to open and release seeds. The snowpack from the Sierra Nevada provides sequoias with the thousands of gallons of water they drink every day. Sequoias have shallow roots and require well-drained soil.  There are 77 groves scattered about California that you can find in Yosemite, Big Trees State Park, (where this one was taken) Sequoia National Park of course, and several others including one on the eastern Sierras near the Kern River.  A fabulous place to hike and meditate and understand your small bit of time on the planet as these trees can live over 3,000 years and some take just as long to completely decay when they fall.  They are the largest living plant. The bark can be up to 60 centimeters thick.  Redwoods are taller but these trees can grow up to 90 meters (over 230 feet tall.) Fires is an important part of there ecosystem as it thins the forest and heats up the pine cones until the seeds pop open to germinate.  Next time you visit California take time to add visiting a grove to your bucket list. It will be awesome experience for kids and adults.
