Winter at Grants Tomb - a photo on Flickriver

            We can't control the weather.  We visited New York in the Winter.  I knew I was not going to get any great Central Park images.  I did plan to visit Grants tomb though.  I knew the tree procession would look naked, but that should work with the Tomb structure.  May carry a mood that would work.  However, when we got there, it was strong overcast and no much color.  Generally just bad conditions.  We visited the museum, but considered it a defeat and started to walk away, towards the nearby Riverside Church.  It had been raining, so there were puddles and I was watching the reflections closely.  But you generally need a bright subject in order to reflect well.  With the cloud cover there was no bright...then, like it was asking me not to leave empty handed, the clouds broke for just a few minutes.   I told the crew to wait as I sprinted to the tree colonnade, muttering under my breath, please don't go, please don't go, please don't go.  No time for the big tripod, I pulled out the pocket pod and got low to work with a puddle.  Light can be a fickle friend. The Tomb was bright, but the clouds were shifting.  I managed to get out one bracket before the clouds shut off the light on the Tomb. It worked.  I got some light on the tomb, a glimmer of blue in the sky, puffy clouds, and most importantly, I got enough light to make the reflection work.  It was even late enough in the day that the lights had come on, giving a nice yellow glow in the lanterns.  

The wind was still up though, so the puddle was not as still as I would have liked, but I was happy to get what I did.   If I were in better shape, I probably could have sprinted better and got more light.  Grrr.
