Hairy Woodpecker Nest (1 of 1) - a photo on Flickriver

            On my last Costa Rica trip with Kenneth Martinez, a great guy and guide, he heard about a Hairy Woodpecker nest near the side of the road and was able to find it.  We spent some time and watched as food was being brought to however many chicks were hidden inside.   I haven’t had the opportunity to watch smaller woodpeckers, so it was a treat for me.  The male sports the red plumage on its head and female has the food in her beak, ready to enter the nest.  (Picoides villosus) (Sony a1, 400mm f/2.8 @ f/4.5, 1/4000 second, ISO 1600)
