The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway’s Victoria Station

On the night of 25th February 1987, Sussex unit 207015 stands alongside 4-BIG 2110, with the 4-BIG showing a '14' headcode, which indicates a Brighton via the Quarry line service.

Victoria was originally two stations adjacent to each other: the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway station on Buckingham Palace Road and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway station on Wilton Road. The two stations were only merged into one in 1925 by the Southern Railway, when the walls separating the two stations was demolished.

For the 21st century traveller at Victoria, it is clear that it was built as two stations. While it is a single space, the architecture chosen by the 19th century railway companies is noticeably different. For travellers, the eastern side (the former LCDR station) still features a 19th century trainshed.

However, this image shows a vanished scene: in the late 1980s the western side (the former LBSC station) was redeveloped with a shopping centre built in a raft over the platforms. The original 19th century trainshed with its wrought iron pillars was removed, and today the western platforms have a noticeably claustrophobic feel.

The liveries and numbers carried by the units date this photograph: while this 4-BIG unit had been carrying blue/grey livery since January 1969, the Sussex unit gained blue/grey in July 1980. The 4-BIG had carried its delivery number (7034) until November 1985 when it was renumbered to 2110, then again in November 1989 to it's final number, 1760.
