Tracks to the Trenches 2014, 40hp “Open“ Motor Rail

            40hp “Open“ Motor Rail Tractor thought to be LR 2156 (Builder's number 435 of 1917). (from Ffestinog Railway). It was rebuilt in 2ft 6ins gauge by its makers as 3663 of 1924 for service in the sugar industry on the West Indian island of St Kitts. Repatriated to England, it was regauged and refurbished with a diesel engine - compare to the protected and armoured versions. Added for the sake of completeness as not photographed elsewhere.

Tracks to the trenches was held on 12 to 14th September at the Apedale Valley Light Railway (North Staffordshire, UK). The event marked 100 years since the start of the "War to end all Wars". The centenary event focused on the often overlooked areas of Transport and Logistics used by all combatants during the conflict and particularly the narrow gauge light railways used to supply the front line and evacuate casualties, often over very difficult terrain unsuitable for road vehicles.  The Apedale Valley Light Railway is the narrow gauge public passenger railway that is operated by the volunteer run Moseley Railway Trust charity at its Apedale home near Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, UK. Featured were many preserved examples of narrow gauge steam, diesel and petrol locomotive types used in WW1 as well as rolling stock. In addition a network of light field railway lines were laid out and with re-enactment groups dressed in period military costume including a representation of typical trench complete with soldiers.
