A postally unused postcard published by The Medici Society Ltd. of London.

Although the card was not posted, someone has written in ink on the back:

"Dear Sofi,
I'm a dab hand with a
wheelbarrow too, and
ever so clever with
bonfires.
Hope to see you on
April 11th. (Palm Sunday).
Still busy on the land.
There's always work to
be done.
Wish we had as much 
produce to sell as they 
have in the picture - the
last hot summer has 
played merry hell with
the plants.
I enclose a cutting for
you to read.

Molly Brett

The scene was painted by Molly (Mary Elizabeth) Brett (1902-1990). She was an English illustrator and children's author, best known for her anthropomorphic artwork.

Molly grew up in Surrey, surrounded by animals and nature. She had a gift for making her animals look thoroughly naturalistic while giving them human characteristics and activities.

She began her career by illustrating weekly papers for children. One of her earliest commissions was to illustrate stories by Enid Blyton. Inspired by this, she went on to write 21 books of her own for The Medici Society.

Molly was associated with The Medici Society for 60 years. The Society has published over 500 of her paintings as postcards, greetings cards and prints.

Molly Brett's work has enchanted generations of children with its beautifully drawn details, subtle colours and magical atmosphere.

Her work follows in the tradition of 20th. century 'dressed animal' illustrators such as Beatrix Potter, Margaret Tempest, Racey Helps and others.
