Abandoned Mine Shaft, Woods Creek, West Coast

Woods Creek, 17 kilometres inland from Greymouth, was the centre of intense gold mining activity, by both European and Chinese miners during the late years of the 19th century. The area is riddled with deep tailraces and abandoned tunnels, some of which are flooded, and provide habitats for cave spiders, crickets (Weta), and Glow Worms.
