Nathan's was started by Nathan Handweker as a nickel hot dog stand in Coney Island in 1916. Handwerker, an employee of Feltman's hot dog stand, decided to open his own business in direct competition with his former employer. Handwerker undercut Feltman's by charging five cents for a hot dog while his former employer was charging ten. A second location was opened in 1959 in Oceanside, New York and another in Yonkers in 1965. The Handwerker family sold the business in 1987 and since then Nathan's has been franchised with many locations but the best is still on Coney Island.
