Viewed from a Danish cargo ship which was passing by.

This 100 metre tall statue overlooks the mighty River Tagus, & Lisbon, on the opposing side of the river.
Inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, this is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ.

To the left side are the former Quinta de Arealva vineyards, the white buildings were the wine factory, cellars, etc... and are long since out of use.

Almada was a small, poor village until the bridge's inauguration. It then expanded rapidly, for two main reasons:-
1) Lower house prices compared to Lisbon, and the short commuting time.
2) The nearby, massive Lisnave shipyard was built in the mid sixties and provided a large number of employment opportunities.

It appears to have been taken in the preparatory phase of construction of the huge Ponte 25 de Abril ( 25 April bridge) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/25_de_Abril_Bridge ) between Almada and Lisbon.
At the time of its inauguration in 1966, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar), after Portuguese Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar, who ordered its construction.

The earthworks, including an excavated roadway from river to the clifftop, are fresh.

We can approximately date the image to mid 1963, as on 10/01/1963, the first coffer dam, the Southern one (i.e. this one) was launched into the waters of the Tagus, and was used to set up the South anchorage point in the riverbed, which would enable construction of the first of the bridge's pillars.
In the middle of the image there are two navigation warning buoys in the river, and the first coffer dam seems to have been initiated (the brown structure).

Coffer dams are used to create a dry working area for where construction takes place - in this case for the south pier of the bridge, all the way down to bedrock - to commence pier building.

The bridge composes of two main carbon steel towers, with a height of 190.5 meters above the water level, 483 meters from each bank , the towers are based on basalt rock more than 80 meters below the surface of the Tagus waters.
