Plumbeous Rail at Parque Nacional Patagonia / Patagonia National Park - Pardirallus sanguinolentus - Pidén

On the morning of November 8th we set off early from the lodge at Valle Chacabuco to explore the wild Patagonian steppe stretching east towards the Argentine border. First stop was a small wetland where, in the cold morning dew we found a family of Plumbeous Rails.

If all rails were as obliging as this species, the family wouldn't be nearly so interesting. Instead of hiding deep in the reeds, these birds are happy to wander about in the relative open.
