Jodie on the ice

            Jodie van Dieen stands well-prepared at the floe edge, kitted out in the recommended gear for early June at 74 degrees north. My wife and I were very careful to follow the detailed cold weather clothing instructions contained in the material prepared by Eagle-eye Tours.

This meant: light merino wool socks, heavy merino wool socks, merino wool base underwear, merino wool long underwear, heavy fleece pants, goretex rain pants, merino wool base layer t-shirt, merino wool long-sleeved top, fleece jacket, down vest, heavy down parka, goretex shell, merino wool neck gaiter, wool hat or ball cap, sunglasses, heavy mitts or gloves, and insulated rubber boots.

All elements were key, but especially key were the rubber boots. It could be cold, but also wet, sometimes we were standing in slush/water half way to our knees, so tall, waterproof, and warm footwear was a necessity. We had the "Arctic Sport" model by the Muck Boot Company (one size up from usual to accommodate heavy socks and not be too tight) and they were great. 

The Inuit guides wore similar foot gear, except they had rubber boots with removable linings that they could dry out at night. I told them Jodie thought there were lots of trees in the arctic and that's why she brought the wrong camo, and they laughed. Actually, we didn't have another shell big enough to fit around all the layers.

The sun was really blasting, so thick layers of sun block were a necessity. Don't wait and see, put it on for the first day on the ice!  As a result of wearing big sunglasses, both Jodie and I ended up with "explorer tans" (AKA reverse racoon), with our faces darkened by the sun everywhere except around the eyes, a mark of either pride or ridicule.
