Territorial dispute on a waterway at the Blumeninsel Siebenbergen

A Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) chases a Greylag Goose (Anser anser) away from the swan's newly hatched offspring that are foraging for food along the shoreline (just out of frame) with their mother (known as a pen).

The male Mute Swan (known as a cob) is aggressive in defense of its nest and its young (cygnets). Here you can see that he is also responsible for defending the cygnets while on the water. His size and impressive hissing make it a formidable adversary for animals as large as a fox. Large waterfowl, such as this goose, are easily driven off. There have been many reports of Mute Swans attacking people who enter their territory. They may also attack small watercraft, such as canoes, that it feels are a threat to its young.

This dramatic moment takes place at the fantastic waterways and gardens at the Flowered Island of Seven Hills (Blumeninsel Siebenbergen) located at the Staatspark Karlsaue in Kassel, Germany.
