Main Rock Art Gallery at Ubirr in Kakadu NP_0441

            For 60,000 years or more Aboriginal groups camped under the large rock overhangs at Ubirr and exploited the abundant food resources of the nearby East Alligator River and Nadab floodplain. Many of these foods are depicted in the rock art of the Main Gallery located in the largest of the overhangs. Here we see a wallaby, a turtle, a water bird and several barramundi. The latter are typically about a metre in length and were a major food source. They are depicted here in the traditional x-ray style that is common in the Aboriginal art of the Kakadu and Arnhem Land regions of Australia’s ‘Top End’.

These particular paintings probably date from the last 500 years or so prior to European contact. The ‘white fella’ shown wearing a shirt, boots and with his hands in his trouser pockets, was probably an early buffalo hunter painted in the 1880s.  

In passing it should be noted that other rock paintings at Ubirr are estimated to be at least 20,000 years old.
