Proud, but not Boastful - a photo on Flickriver

            The inscription on the opposing side of this memorial reads, "In Honor And Memory Of The Men Of The United States Marine Corps Who Have Given Their Lives To Their Country Since 10 November 1775."

This sculpture is, of course, based on the iconic Joe Rosenthal photograph on 1945, capturing six Marines raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.  The scene is one of six otherwise ordinary American men struggling under fire, and against the challenge of completing such a task in a hostile location.    There are those who would state that United States Marines are no "ordinary" men.  To that I would counter, that is what has always made America great, that it is ordinary Americans who struggle and give their lives to uphold the principles of freedom, compassion, and equality in every corner of the world.  

Certainly, America is no Utopia - it is messy, and fraught with challenges that sometimes leave its citizens wanting for a better place.  But it is that wanting for a better place, that makes Americans continue to find the paths forward, the ways to improve, the ways to make this the place that is better than it was.  America has never not been great, but its people have never stopped struggling to be better.
