Cloudy Outlook for the King of Beers

            I recently toured the Anheuser-Busch InBev Brewery in St Louis, Missouri, a National Historic Landmark District, and home to the most famous Budweiser brand.

Opened as the Bavarian Brewery in 1852 by Mr. George Schneider, the facility expanded over the next several years, but fell on hard times and changed hands several times by the end of the decade.  In 1860, Eberhard Anheuser and William D'Oench purchased the brewery, saving it from bankruptcy.  In 1869, Adolphus Busch, by then Eberhard Anheuser's son-in-law, bought out Mr. D'Oench. In 1879, a year prior to Mr. Anheuser's death, the company was rebranded to Anheuser-Busch, and remained so until 2008, when a hostile takeover by international conglomerate, InBev, created the Anheuser-Busch InBev company.

This year, for the first time since it's introduction, the company's flagship product, Budweiser, is no longer one of the top three selling beers in the United States.  It is, however, still the top selling non-"light beer."  Recent headlines about the company watering down its product, and the ongoing onslaught from micro- and craft brewers have taken their toll on the "King of Beers."

While I am merely a passing fan of Budweiser, myself, I have to say that the tour of this brewery, the architecture, the Clydesdales, and the tasting afterward were all very worthwhile.  I would highly recommend to anyone traveling through St Louis, Missouri, to stop here for a couple of hours and learn about the history of one of America's signature brands.
