A birds' paradise

            The Gmünder Au is a 184-hectare nature reserve in the municipalities of Pfatter and Wörth an der Donau in Bavaria. 
The nature reserve includes an oxbow lake called "Alte Donau" (Old Danube), which was created in 1851 when a river bend was pierced in the course of straightening the Danube. The Old Danube is flowed through by the river Wiesent. The nature reserve is characterized by extensively used meadows, ponds with siltation zones and wooded areas of the softwood floodplain. It is also a resting, breeding and wintering area for rare bird species. In the west are the nature reserves Pfatterer Au (south of the Danube) and Stöcklwörth (north of the Danube), in the east already in the district Straubing-Bogen the nature reserve Donauauen bei Stadldorf.
