Radioactive Photographic (JB Kucken)

Today I felt the mood for a black and white stranger photo, and when I came lurking around the block on Gilman Street; I knew that the face outside Blue Lotus Tattoo would be a great subject for such a photo. Blowing smoke from an electronic cigarette, combined with tattoos and dreads to boot JB made for the perfect subject. I asked if I could snap a few photos, expressing my interesting in his awesome appearance. He greatly agreed, and thus I snapped off photo after photo. I had to check my settings a few times, as the sun danced between the clouds on it's way down the horizon in the late afternoon. After a few close-up shots (to be loaded later), I went in for a more personal head shot/product angle; I included the bit of the Blue Lotus sign in the background to give props to Madison (my home and home to many of my strangers).

As we chatted about my process behind the capturing of the most interesting people on the isthmus for my 100 more strangers project I learned that JB had just finished his Associates Degree in photography at Madison College. Such a small world, as I listed off a few names of professors I'd had back in 2008/2009 during my stint in the program. I was slightly surprised to find that they all were still actively teaching, and just as interesting as I remembered them to be. As it turns out, JB also has a bit of fame to his name as he has a photo hanging in the lower level of the Overture Center for the Arts. A little dark and mysterious, but that's ideally how most of his work is; I've yet to check it out but the next free bit of time I get I will!

I then explained that I would like to include him in the 100 strangers group here on Flickr. He had no objections, but once I was done taking photos he snuck inside for a minute. As he did this, I readied myself with a business card and as fate may have it he returned with one as well. Parting ways, I was satisfied with my photos for the afternoon and my stranger encounter complete. A new business card to add to my collection, and a few friend made! This is really what the 100 strangers project is all about, making new friends and meeting new people!
