            El embalse de Riaño se encuentra situado al Este de la provincia de León, en la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León, España. Pertenece a la cuenca del Duero, y es alimentado por el río Esla.

Con una capacidad superior a los 650 hectómetros cúbicos, es capaz de regar 80.000 hectáreas ubicadas, sobre todo en la Provincia de León, en las áreas regables de los ríos Esla y Cea.

Las compuertas del Pantano de Riaño fueron cerradas el 31 de Diciembre de 1987, y no existió ninguna inauguración oficial ,como se ha dicho anteriormente en este sitio. Si bien su construcción comenzó en 1965. El retraso en su llenado se explica por un cúmulo de circunstancias sociales y políticas y que con el paso de los años dió lugar a las protestas en contra de la culminación de las obras y del comienzo del llenado de la presa, que fueron en aumento con manifestaciones multitudinarias y con cargas policiales para el desalojo forzoso de los residentes en los municipios afectados.
