Mystery Writers in Southern California

            Though best remembered as the author of horror stories, Edgar Allan Poe was a prolific writer. He authored poetry, science fiction, fantasy, satire, and historical fiction. He also created the modern mystery story. His character C. Auguste Dupin was a detective with a superior intellect and incredible powers of deduction. Stories as "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Purloined Letter" were these puzzles that were solved at the end by Dupin. Sound familiar? That's because Sir Arthur Conan Doyle basically used the prototype of Poe's Dupin and created Sherlock Holmes. Poe predated Doyle by about fifty years, but it was Doyle whose brainchild is best remembered by readers, and film and TV audiences.

However, Poe gets the last laugh, through groups and societies that have long appreciated his considerable literary skills and command of English and classic languages (e.g., Latin and Greek), plus realizing that Sherlock Holmes could never have existed without C. Auguste Dupin. Never. No way.

Thus mystery writers all over the country (and the world) recognize Edgar Allan Poe as the father of the modern murder mystery. Awards are given in his name for outstanding mystery writing, not Doyle.

I was in a hurry to hook up with a couple of friends at the Festival, so I didn't get the chance to talk with anyone connected to the Mystery Writers of America. Come to think of it, I saw no one around the canopy when I had walked by. Otherwise I just might have stopped in to chat.

Edgar Allan Poe lived a relatively short life (forty years), but his literary output exceeded those works of authors who lived far longer than he did. And most of his works remain timeless fascinating reads.
