Evening in Florence - a photo on Flickriver

Italy. I visited Florence some 25 years after first deciding to go. Anticipation of what might be there, in the end, leading to prevarication. I arrived in winter and dropped my bags at my tired old hotel and walked into the centre.

Coming up a street I first saw the orange bauble that is the Dome of the Duomo. Magnificent. It was such a moment of delight that I laughed out loud. An elderly Florentine matron wrapped up in fur against the season, looked at me coldly over the top of her designer sun glasses - her carefully plucked eye brows arching to indicate another example of the insanity of tourists.

As I walked, the sun began to set and a rich pink settled over the roofs, spires and domes of the city state. I reached Giotto's campanile and much to my surprise discovered it was open. So I began to climb, and climb and climb. The trek was ardous as I went up and the beating of my heart seemed to throb in my head as my breath caught at my throat - but on and on I went through the medieval masonry scores of steps and sudden corners - finally to emerge into a room some hundreds of feet and years from the street below.

The views were breathtaking - Florence laid out in front of me like pages from God's art book. And thus this picture and a few others. Florence is magnifico!
