Cold Camera

            If you ever wondered what it takes to keep the rear of your camera from frosting over in zero temperatures?
This is the back of my hand with gloves on covered with frost from my breath, the trick here is to breath out of the side of your mouth and allow the gloves to collect the frost. Using either fleece or wool that has a rough surface to help the frost to collect. It is important to clean the frost off when you're done, so the material doesn't become wet. I carry a paint brush to clean of the frost of myself and camera gear. 
The frost on the back of my hand took only about 15 to 20 seconds to form. Working in the cold its best to work slow and limit the time the camera is up to your face. This takes practice along with working with gloves on. Here I have two pair of gloves on one a fleece fingerless and thumbless glove with have covers for your fingers.
The most important layer is the base layer, which is considered the anti contact glove. These can be of any thin warm material to avoid skin contact of any cold objects, in this case wool.

Face masks do work in the cold but with one fall back, they frost over, and the frost will stick to the camera. 
If you're venturing out in the cold this winter and are not familiar with working in the cold start out with short trip and find out what works best for you. If your plans include stepping out into less traveled areas it's best to find some to join you and or leave your plans with a friend. When things go wrong in the cold things get dynamic real fast and usually end with less than favorable results. 
Be careful and get out and enjoy what winter has to offer and create some great images.
