Hot Creek Sunrise, Eastern Sierra - a photo on Flickriver

            Hot Creek is exactly what its name implies--a heated creek fed by active (if somewhat stinky) geothermal springs.  And it's one of the prettiest places in the eastern sierra.

The forecast on the morning I took this looked unpromising bordering on boring.  But when we stepped outside our hotel room in Mammoth well before sunrise, we walked right into snow flurries mixed with graupel.  I went from wondering if I'd having a dull, cloudless sky to wondering if the clouds would lift enough to make sunrise worthwhile.  Not only did it not disappoint, but we were able to catch sunrise here and then make a quick dash to Convict Lake where we caught storm virga glowing pink from the partially obscured rising sun.  I'm not sure I've ever had an experience where I was able to shoot sunrise from two different spots on the same morning, but I really lucked out here.
