Europe - the Netherlands / Yde girl - a photo on Flickriver

            Yde Girl is a bog body found in the Stijfveen peat bog near the village of Yde, Netherlands. She was found on 12 May 1897 and was reputedly uncannily well-preserved when discovered (especially her hair), but by the time the body was turned over to the authorities a fortnight later it had been severely damaged and deteriorated.
 
Carbon-14 tests have indicated that Yde Girl died between 54 BCE and 128 CE at an approximate age of 16 years. She had long reddish blond hair, but one side of her head had been shaved before she died. (Recent studies of Windeby I have suggested that the shaved hair phenomenon in some bog bodies may simply attest to one side of the head being exposed to oxygen slightly longer than the other). Scans have shown that she suffered from a spine condition known as scoliosis.
 
The body was found clad in a woolen cape and with a woolen band, made in a braiding technique known as sprang, wrapped around the neck, suggesting she was executed or sacrificed. There was also a stab wound in the area of her collarbone, but that was not determined as the cause of death. As with most bog bodies, the skin and features are still preserved because of the tannic acid in the marsh water. When Yde Girl was excavated, the diggers accidentally caused a wound to the skull. Only the torso of the girl, the head, the right hand and the feet were found. The rest of her body was not preserved. The Yde Girl was put on display at a museum and further study was not carried out on the remains until 1992. Richard Neave, of Manchester University, took a CT scan of the skull of Yde Girl and determined her age, both anatomically and historically. The Yde Girl became internationally known when Neave made a reconstruction of her head, using techniques from plastic surgery and criminal pathology. Yde Girl and her modern reconstruction are displayed at the Drents Museum in Assen.

La jeune fille d'Yde est une momie des tourbières exhumée près du petit village d'Yde dans les marais de Bourtange aux Pays-Bas. Elle fut découverte le 12 mai 1897 dans un état de conservation tout à fait remarquable (particulièrement sa chevelure), mais il s'écoula deux semaines avant que le corps soit expédié aux autorités ; dans l'intervalle, il avait subi de nombreuses détériorations.
 
Les tests au carbone 14 ont montré que la fille d'Yde est morte entre -54 et 128 de notre ère, à l'âge approximatif de 16 ans. Elle portait de longs cheveux blonds tirant sur le roux, mais une partie de son crâne semble avoir été rasée avant son exécution. La tomographie a permis de montrer que cette jeune fille souffrait d'une scoliose.
 
Le corps était enveloppé dans une cape de laine et portait une cordelette avec un nœud coulant autour du cou, ce qui a fait conclure que la jeune fille avait été exécutée ou sacrifiée. Le corps présente également la marque d'un coup de poignard à la clavicule, qui toutefois n'a pas entraîné la mort. Comme pour la plupart des hommes des tourbières, la peau et les traits du visage ont été préservés grâce à l'acide tannique de la tourbe. Lorsque la fille d'Yde a été mise au jour, les ouvriers sectionnèrent accidentellement son corps, détruisant la cage thoracique. Le corps a été exposé pendant des décennies dans un musée sans que de nouvelles recherches interviennent avant 1992.
 
Cette année-là, le professeur Richard Neave de l'université de Manchester, analysant le crâne par tomographie, détermina l'âge de la morte et data la momie. La fille d'Yde fit à nouveau parler d'elle lorsque Neave publia une reconstitution des traits de son visage, s'appuyant sur des techniques de chirurgie esthétique et de pathologie. Le corps et la reconstitution du visage sont aujourd'hui exposés au musée de Drenthe, à Assen.
 
Le visage révélé présente des diformités : des petits éléments constitutifs (yeux, bouche etc), des yeux assez écartés et un front très haut et très droit. Une courbure de la colonne vertébrale a aussi été révélée par scannographie. Les archéologues ont émis l'hypothèse de son infirmité comme cause de son sacrifice, car considérée alors comme «défavorisée des Dieux»
