Soldiers & Sailors World War Memorial

            The Soldiers & Sailors World War Memorial building (Robinson Museum) was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.  Photograph by SHPO staff, 2017. 

Built in 1930-1932, the Soldiers & Sailors building has a steel structure and is faced with smooth pink-orange sandstone from the Evans quarry in Fall River County.  The front steps are Milbank granite.  Its Neoclassical design by Sioux Falls firm Hugill & Blatherwick is seen in the pedimented portico with Ionic capitals, pedimented entrance door surrounds, egg-and-dart and dentil moldings, and urns at the corners of the central block's roof.

It was the second state building in Pierre, after the 1910 capitol building.  First conceived after World War I, the memorial had its first fund drive in May 1919 directed by A.N. Walters. When this drive failed, the plan lay dormant for ten years until the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad made a gift of land to the state.

At the time of nomination, the building housed the offices of the South Dakota State Historical Society, the Historical Resource Center, and the Robinson Museum.  These moved to a new facility in 1989.  This building remains in use for state offices.
