• early battleground in Civil Rights movement • site of African American voter registration organized by Fayette County Civic and Welfare League (FCCWL), summer, 1959 • African Americans (then 70% of county population) prevented from voting in a Dem primary restricted to "all known white Democrats"

• lawsuit filed, 1st ever under US Civil Rights Act of 1957 • ruling cleared way for African Americans to register • county restricted registration to Wednesdays only, provided one registrar for long lines of black voters • sitting or standing on courthouse lawn prohibited while waiting to register

• in response to African American registration drive, White Citizens' Council met here, 1960, to ban blacks and some whites from shopping in Somerville • many black sharecroppers evicted from their farms by white owners • FCCWL set up tent city for them • photos
