La basilica di Santa Maria Novella è una delle più importanti chiese di Firenze e sorge sull'omonima piazza. Se Santa Croce era ed è un centro antichissimo di cultura francescana e Santo Spirito ospitava l'ordine agostiniano, Santa Maria Novella era per Firenze il punto di riferimento per un altro importante ordine mendicante, i domenicani.
Nel 1219, dodici domenicani arrivarono a Firenze da Bologna, guidati da Fra' Giovanni da Salerno. Nel 1221, ottennero la piccola chiesa di Santa Maria delle Vigne, così chiamata per i terreni agricoli che la circondavano (all'epoca fuori dalle mura). Questa chiesetta, di proprietà dei canonici del Duomo, era stata consacrata nel 1049 o, secondo altre fonti, nel 1094, anche se questa seconda ipotesi è più probabile, poiché nell'Archivio Capitolare della cattedrale fiorentina è conservato un documento che menziona questa data. Ad ogni modo, della chiesetta antica sono stati trovati alcuni resti sotto l'attuale sagrestia, in particolare le basi di alcuni pilastri romanici.
Nel 1242 la comunità domenicana fiorentina decise di iniziare i lavori per un nuovo e più ampio edificio, ottenendo dal papa la concessione di indulgenze per chi avesse contribuito economicamente ai lavori già a partire dal 1246. Il 18 ottobre 1279, durante la festa di San Luca, venne celebrata nella Cappella Gaddi la cerimonia della Posa della Prima Pietra con la benedizione del cardinale Latino Malabranca Orsini, anche se di fatto i lavori erano già da tempo iniziati. La nuova chiesa aveva la facciata orientata verso sud. La costruzione fu completata alla metà del XIV secolo. Il progetto, secondo fonti documentarie molto controverse, si deve a due frati domenicani, fra' Sisto da Firenze e fra' Ristoro da Campi, ma partecipò all'edificazione anche fra' Jacopo Passavanti, mentre il campanile e buona parte del convento si deve all'intervento immediatamente successivo di fra' Jacopo Talenti. La chiesa, sebbene già conclusa verso la metà del Trecento con la costruzione dell'adiacente convento, fu tuttavia ufficialmente consacrata solo nel 1420 da papa Martino V che risiedeva in città.
Su commissione della famiglia Rucellai, Leon Battista Alberti disegnò il grande portale centrale, la trabeazione e il completamento superiore della facciata, in marmo bianco e verde scuro, terminata nel 1470. Tra il 1565 e il 1571 la chiesa fu rimaneggiata ad opera di Giorgio Vasari, con la rimozione del recinto del coro e la ricostruzione degli altari laterali, che comportò l'accorciamento delle finestre gotiche. Tra il 1575 e il 1577 fu costruita da Giovanni Antonio Dosio la cappella Gaddi. Un ulteriore rimaneggiamento si ebbe tra il 1858 e il 1860 ad opera dell'architetto Enrico Romoli.
Un importante restauro è stato effettuato nel 1999 con i fondi del giubileo, in seguito al quale per l'accesso alla chiesa è stato istituito un biglietto d'ingresso. Dall'aprile 2006 al marzo 2008 la facciata è stata di nuovo restaurata.

A Basílica de Santa Maria Novella é uma igreja em Florença, na Itália. Situa-se no noroeste da parte antiga da cidade, na piazza de mesmo nome, quase junto à principal estação ferroviária florentina.
No século IX, ali havia o pequeno oratório de Santa Maria delle Vigne; em 1049 foi construída a pequena Santa Maria Novella, concedida em 1221 aos dominicanos. A ampliação principia em 1279, seguindo o projeto de Fra Sisto da Firenze e Fra Ristoro da Campi. Completa em meados do século XIII, a nova igreja só é consagrada, pelo papa Eugênio IV, em 1420.
Giorgio Vasari foi o arquiteto da reforma levada a cabo entre 1565 e 1571, que removeu o recinto do coro e reconstruiu os altares laterais. Já entre 1858 e 1860, reformou-se novamente a basílica, sob ordens de Enrico Romoli.
O interior, em forma de cruz latina, é subdividido em três naves, a central com cem metros de comprimento.
Artistas que aí trabalharam incluem Filippo Brunelleschi, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Masaccio, além do próprio Vasari.

Santa Maria Novella is a church in Florence, Italy, situated just across from the main railway station which shares its name. Chronologically, it is the first great basilica in Florence, and is the city's principal Dominican church.
The church, the adjoining cloister, and chapterhouse contain a store of art treasures and funerary monuments. Especially famous are frescoes by masters of Gothic and early Renaissance. They were financed through the generosity of the most important Florentine families, who ensured themselves of funerary chapels on consecrated ground.
This church was called Novella (New) because it was built on the site of the 9th-century oratory of Santa Maria delle Vigne. When the site was assigned to Dominican Order in 1221, they decided to build a new church and an adjoining cloister. The church was designed by two Dominican friars, Fra Sisto Fiorentino and Fra Ristoro da Campi. Building began in the mid-13th century (about 1246), and was finished about 1360 under the supervision of Friar Iacopo Talenti with the completion of the Romanesque-Gothic bell tower and sacristy. At that time, only the lower part of the Tuscan gothic facade was finished. The three portals are spanned by round arches, while the rest of the lower part of the facade is spanned by blind arches, separated by pilasters, with below Gothic pointed arches, striped in green and white, capping noblemen's tombs. This same design continues in the adjoining wall around the old churchyard. The church was consecrated in 1420.
On a commission from Giovanni di Paolo Rucellai, a local textile merchant, Leone Battista Alberti designed the upper part of the inlaid black and white marble facade of the church (1456–1470). He was already famous as the architect of the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini, but even more for his seminal treatise on architecture De Re Aedificatoria, based on the book De Architectura of the classical Roman writer Vitruvius. Alberti had also designed the facade for the Rucellai Palace in Florence.
Alberti attempted to bring the ideals of humanist architecture, proportion and classically-inspired detailing, to bear on the design while also creating harmony with the already existing medieval part of the facade. His contribution consists of a broad frieze decorated with squares and everything above it, including the four white-green pilasters and a round window, crowned by a pediment with the Dominican solar emblem, and flanked on both sides by enormous S-curved volutes. The four columns with Corinthian capitals on the lower part of the facade were also added. The pediment and the frieze are clearly inspired by the antiquity, but the S-curved scrolls in the upper part are new and without precedent in antiquity. The scrolls (or variations of them), found in churches all over Italy, all find their origin here in the design of this church.
The frieze below the pediment carries the name of the patron : IOHAN(N)ES ORICELLARIUS PAU(LI) F(ILIUS) AN(NO) SAL(UTIS) MCCCCLXX (Giovanni Rucellai son of Paolo in the blessed year 1470).
