Traveller's tree is an evergreen tree with an open, fan-like crown; it usually grows up to 20 metres tall, though specimens up to 30 metres have been reported. The cylindrical stem can be solitary, or branched at the base. The plant produces large, banana-like leaves that can each be 2.5 - 4 metres long and 80 - 150cm wide on top of a stout petiole that is 3 - 6 metres long. These are held in a fan-shaped formation of 20 or more leaves.  The plant produces an edible seed that is sometimes gathered from the wild for local use. It gains its common name from the fact that copious amounts of rainwater and liquid plant secretions can collect in the leaf bases and leaf bracts of the plant - these have been used as refreshment by thirsty travellers. The tree is widely cultivated as an ornamental in the tropics and subtropics.

También llamado comúnmente el árbol del viajero o palma del viajero (aunque no es realmente una palma), forma parte de la familia de las Strelitziaceae. Se denomina de esta manera por el hecho de que los viajeros sedientos podían encontrar depósitos de agua en muchas partes de la planta, tales como los foliolos de las hojas, las brácteas de las flores y en el interior de los hoyejos de la base de las hojas, cada uno de los cuales puede almacenar un cuarto de litro de agua. Es la única especie del género monotípico Ravenala.

Esta "palmeira" é conhecida pelo nome comum de árvore-do-viajante, é uma planta herbácea de tronco alto, endêmica de Madagascar, pertencente à família Strelitziaceae.
O caule é longo (8 a 10 m), e pode em condições favoráveis atingir os 20 m.  As folhas, semelhantes às da bananeira, são dispostas como em um leque e se inserem no caule com um longo pedúnculo, em cuja concavidade se retém a água da chuva.  As flores são grandes e numerosas, de cor branca, hermafroditas e assimétricas.  Os frutos são cápsulas secas, contendo numerosas sementes, as quais são circundada de uma fibra azul intensa, que atrai as aves, favorecendo sua disseminação.
A Ravenala é um símbolo de Madagascar; aparece, em forma estilizada, no logo da companhia aérea nacional.

L'arbre du voyageur est un arbre à feuillage persistant avec une couronne ouverte et de genre fan; il pousse habituellement jusqu'à 20 mètres de haut, bien que des spécimens jusqu'à 30 mètres aient été signalés. La tige cylindrique peut être solitaire, ou ramifiée à la base. La plante produit de grandes feuilles, comme la banane, qui peuvent chacune être 2,5-4 mètres de long et 80-150 cm de large sur un pétiole robuste qui est de 3-6 mètres de long. Ceux-ci sont tenus dans une formation en forme de ventilateur de 20 feuilles ou plus. La plante produit une graine comestible qui est parfois recueillie à partir de la nature pour une utilisation locale. Il tire son nom commun du fait que des quantités abondantes d'eau de pluie et de sécrétions végétales liquides peuvent recueillir dans les bases foliaires et les bractées foliaires de la plante-ceux-ci ont été utilisés comme rafraîchissement par les voyageurs assoiffés. L'arbre est largement cultivé comme ornement dans les tropiques et sous tropiques. 
Le Ravenala est un symbole de Madagascar; Il apparaît, sous une forme stylisée, le logo de la compagnie aérienne nationale.
