"Since 1982, I have drawn or painted tributes- on special anniversaries, whenever possible - to the vibrant and loving memory of my late beloved and devoted mother Marjorie J Whatley (1943-1981).

As a child in the 1970s I had made drawings of her, off guard; and in October 1980 she sat for a pen drawing, as she listened to classical music...but I was never to get another chance.

Through many years I was in the deepest of grief; and while my heart will never completely heal from the loss,I am increasingly trying my best to go forward with hopeful happiness - just as she would want. Within my heart I pledged over 20 years ago that throughout my life I would celebrate her life, share her memory with the world- her loving presence - through my art - and I will, as long as I live.

This tribute, inspired by two photographs taken in the summer 1980, captures the natural, unaffected, spontaneous, vivacious laughter of hers that would light up a room; how she would suddenly turn, her fine dark hair often tucked behind her ear.

I was grateful to be able to make this painting, with deep prayers, on November 18, 2008 - the 65th anniversary of my mother's birth in Norwich, Norfolk, UK".
