Passage to the holding cells - a photo on Flickriver

            Dark, damp, claustrophobic and said to be haunted.  This is the short passage to the holding cells below the Guildhall in Worcester.  One of the cramped cellrooms faces you as you walk down it and you can only imagine what went through the minds of the criminals as they were brought down here.  It was in use during the 18th century and the vast majority of prisoners spent their last hours here before being taken to the place of hanging less than 30 yards away. Only the very lucky few left here alive in order to be transported to the penal colony in Australia.
