Thésée-la-Romaine (Loir-et-Cher) - a photo on Flickriver

            Barrage sur le Cher.

L'aménagement des barrages sur le Cher, entre Tours et Saint-Aignan, pour la navigation commerciale, est réalisée au milieu du XIXe siècle (à partir de 1836).  Le Cher cnalisé, long d'une soixantaine de kilomètres, comporait  16 barrages éclusés : Saint-Aignan, La Méchinière, Talufiau, Thésée (ou Mazelles) , Angé, Bourré, Montrichard, Saint-Georges, Chisseaux, Thoré, Bléré, Vallet, Nitray, Roujoux, Larçay, Rochepinard. 

Les barrages permettaient de surélever l'eau pour permettre la navigation en dehors des périodes de hautes eaux. Le Cher canalisé reliait le canal de Berry à la Loire.

La maison éclusière comportait deux logements séparés par un porche central : Un pour l'éclusier, l'autre pour le barragiste.  

Le Cher possède les plus belles maisons éclusières de France. 

Concurrencé par le rail et la route, le Cher canalisé est rayé des voies navigables dans les années 1950. L'ambition est maintenant de restituer la continuité écologique de la rivière.
