Sunset at Sandhill Crane Festival - a photo on Flickriver

            Scores of Red-Winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) roost in the shrubs on the shore of a frozen pond (at left of the frame) as the sun sets on the refuge.  The mountains in the background are the Sangre de Cristo Range, seen here from about 35 miles across the San Luis Valley.  We spent a nice winter day at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge for the Sandhill Crane Festival.  There were fewer human attendees than usual, but the Sandhill Cranes showed up in large numbers, as well as large flocks of Canadian Geese, several species of ducks, and flocks of Red-Winged Blackbirds.
