2015 - Calgary - Airplane

            East Village is an up and coming neighbourhood in downtown Calgary between the eastern edge of the central business district and the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers.  The development includes a linear riverfront park replete with  public art.

"Airplane" sculpture is part of "The Field Manual", a multi disiplanary installation. The hand is holding a stylized airplane.

THE FIELD MANUAL - AIRPLANE:
Comissioned by the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation as a part of the Riverwalk Public Art Program, the work is the result of a collaborative effort with Ivan Ostapenko and Kai Cabunoc-Boettcher under the umbrella of Light & Soul.  The work embodies both sculpture and mural work along the new Bow River waterfront park in East Village.

Created by local art collective Light & Soul, "The Field Manual: a compendium of local influence" is a vibrant and intricate mix of paint, layered digital photography and foam, steel and stucco sculpture of human hands.

The Field Manual" is a sprawling and playful nod to the East Village's history and a whimsical look at it's future. This piece is titled "Airplane" - hard to tell from this angle but that is the object held in the hand.

EAST VILLAGE HISTORY:
The confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, where East Village now stands, was once the traditional land of the Blackfoot Nation, prior to the arrival of American fur traders around 1840.

In 1875, to curb the whiskey trade that had begun to move into the area, the Northwest Mounted Police established Fort Brisebois, which later became Fort Calgary.

By the time Calgary began to boom in 1906, East Village was a vibrant community, a mix of residential, commercial, service, institutional and industrial activity. 

Eventually the area fell into decline, first as large foundries took over from family-run blacksmiths, then as unsavoury elements took over the community, until the city medical officer of health declared East Village to be a “skid row” in 1941.

Construction of the city's light rail transit line, coupled with the closure of 8th Avenue at Macleod Trail in the early 1980s by construction of the massive Calgary Municipal Building, resulted in East Village being "cut off" figuratively speaking from the rest of downtown. As a result, it became home to many rundown properties and vacant lots over the years, and a crime problem.

Urban renewal schemes of the 1960’s brought widespread demolition to East Village. Aside from the construction of a few mid-rise towers, East Village was largely neglected until 2008.

Since 2009, $357 million in infrastructure improvements has kick-started the revitalization of East Village. In the short time since, the master-planned neighbourhood has become a vibrant, growing community, with an award-winning RiverWalk, public art, parks and streetscapes, and construction of new homes and Bow River bridges.

The reopening of the historic Simmons Building as a gastronomic hub with the welcoming of East Village’s first new residents to their new homes, make 2015 the year that East Village opens for pleasure.
