2015 - MEXICO - Morelia - Light the Night

Morelia's Cathedral is nicely lighted at night. The building is a very imposing structure with its 70 metre bell towers dominating the Morelia skyline.

Originally, the Cathedral was located in Patzcuaro in the Basilica of Nuestra Senora de la Salud, but in 1580, it was moved to Valladolid (Morelia's original name). The new Cathedral’s first stone was laid by Bishop Ramirez del Prado in 1660. Unlike other colonial period churches, this cathedral does not face west (faces north). Since it is devoted to Jesus’ Transfiguration, the Cathedral is also unique. Though the Morelia Cathedral was not yet completed, it was sanctified in 1705 but not completed until 1774.

The building houses an organ from Germany with a staggering 4,600 pipes, making it one of the largest in Latin America.
