Feeding Avocet

            Avocets feed by sweeping their recurved bill from side to side just below the water's surface.  I say water's surface but they also feed in sloppy mud, feeding mainly on crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, worms and molluscs.  You can see the wake of muddy water created by the movement of this bird's bill.  When they are breeding they seem to be intolerant of any other birds feeding nearby.  This one was chasing off small flocks of starlings that  settled on the dry mud.  I photographed this one at Spurn Point in East Yorkshire.
